When it comes to German Shepherds, it’s important to remember these are smart dogs. They can work things out and even though you think you may be able to just get by with a basic fence, please think again. As an example, if there is a small hole, that a very small cat can just squeeze through, I can assure you that you will find your German Shepherd will be able to work out the breach, by either digging or manipulating the fence. You really want to make sure that all is very safe and covered.

It is also imperative to ensure that the gates are securely locked. We actually lock our gates with a key, as our German Shepherd has worked out how to turn the handle and otherwise open the gate. As I said, these are highly intelligent dogs.

Your New Dog needs to be safe and sound, and this can be best done by starting to ensure your home is puppy proofed before your pet arrives.

Puppy Proofing Your Home for Your New German Shepherd

It is best to think of your puppy like a new baby when it comes to protecting their safety when they come home. Quite seriously, if you have some things that you would not want them to play with, break, ior otherwise get involved with, it needs to be put away, up high, and out of the way.

German Shepherds will make even the most determined babies seem like small cheese. Seriously, they are curious and very intelligent. Hence, you also need to hide any chemicals, and we even use one of those baby doors that are often used in front of steps to separate a section of the house. The idea is that the dog has access to the living areas of the house, but not the bedrooms. However we have found, if she needs to get out urgently to relieve herself, she will break through the gate anyways, but otherwise respects it and knows where she can and is not supposed to go in the house.

It is also important to remember that German Shepherds are extremely intelligent, and can work out most ‘protective systems’ and you really shoud in no way underestimate your dog. It is for this reason that they are as good as they are in the fioelds of police work, rescue, and other obedience, and knowledge areas.

Before buying any dog, German Shepherd, or any other breed, from a breeder, there are certain questions that are quite important to ask.

These include, but are not limited to asking the breeder to show you their credentials, as well as the credentials of the breed, to prove that the breed is ‘pure’. No self respecting and genuine breeder will be in any way upset or offended. In fact, they will almost always expect these questions from you. It will also show them that you are a serious individual, who cares about your new dog.

At the end of the day, while they are making a living from breding dogs, it should be secondary to them, and they should normally be more concerned about the dog;s welfare. If this is seen to be the case, this will prove they are interested and care for the dogs.

Another aspect of this process is that you can meet the breeder, and see the dogs at their first home.

You should be checking that it looks clean, and that the dog looks healthy and happy.

In fact, when we got our dog, we chose her on the basis, amongst many other things, that she ran up to the gate first, and was the fastest in the whole litter. She showed us she was, (and still is) very spirited and lively. She is a healthy and happy dog.

These are some of the things to look out for when speaking to and meeting your dogs and breeder.

You can tell if things ‘look right’ or not. A breeder with clean premises and healthy looking dogs cares about their dogs.

They will also tend to produce happy and healthy dogs.

For anyone interested in getting themselves a German Shepherd, I can only recommend a certified breeder, or your local shelter, such as a recognized RSPCA unit. Normally, they will ensure that the dog is healthy and has been adequately protected with the right vaccinations.

However, I would like to point out the importance of ensuring that you are getting  a dog for the right reasons. Never ever give a dog as a present, without the rightful, and pre thought out issues I will discuss below. It is really important to ensure that a dog is ‘gotten’ for the right reasons, both for yourselves as a family as well as for the dog’s benefit and happiness.

It is important to ensure that you have the house or place that is safe and will allow your dog to be their best. As an example, if you live on a farm, or large house with large gardens, that is great for your new dog. If you live in a studio apartment, it may be a little more of a challenge, if you do not have a suitable garden, unless you have access to a park that is relatively near by. It is important to consider these issues as they will affect your Germans Shepherd’s well being. They are relatively high energy dogs, and they need to expel their energy and be a part of a family that is active.

However, when your decision to get your German Shepherd is based on the ability to care for and afford the care, the food, and have the place for the dog, that is another matter. I will expand more on this in another post. However, please be sure that you have thought through the issues well, as it is important for the happiness of all of you in your family as well as your new dog. To be blunt, a German Shepherd has a typical life span of around twelve years and they need to be a part of your family for this time.

Please be certain you will be happy with your choice of dog for this time, to allow maximum happiness for all concerned.

I can assure you, that with my own German shepherd, I certainly was at a point where I was not sure who was training who at first, but fortunately, with time, that sorted itself all out. We found it was  also interesting in that we had a cat who had been with us for many years when we got our German Shepherd, and there was an initial establishhment of where each animal stood in the chain of hierarchy. This is normal, as each animal places themselves in a position of the ‘order of priority” in a domestic environment as well as in the wild.

Training for your German Shepherd can take many forms, in terms of basic training or a more advanced approach. However, as a basic approach. all dogs need t be trained sufficiently well to ensure that they are house trained, and able to ‘cope’ when you receive house guests without having to pick you guests up off the floor.
