A sure sign of a well-behaved dog is when you enter someone’s home and their pet does not jump on you in greeting. Not only is jumping on guests annoying, it can be dangerous. Large dogs can knock people down and are capable of seriously injuring small children or the elderly. Not to mention all the mud he gets on your clothes on rainy days!

Jumping on people is also a sure signal that your dog thinks he’s the leader of the pack. Watch dogs together and you’ll see them exhibiting the same behavior. Allowing your dog to jump on people undermines all your training.

These dogs have learned if they jump on people they get attention and often petted. Your job is to help them unlearn that with positive reinforcement. Here are some tips to help you do just that:

1. Ignore your dog when you arrive and leave the house. Ditch the long goodbye and the long-lost dog owner greeting. Don’t greet your pet for five minutes once you get home. This will help break the habit.

2. Do you want to dance? If a week or so of not greeting your dog doesn’t break the behavior, try this on your medium or large dog. When he jumps on you, firmly grip his paws while he’s still on his hind legs. Hold them without squeezing until he starts to squirm, then firmly command, “Off!” Some trainers recommend stepping on your pet’s back paws at the same time, but this could cause injury to your pet’s delicate feet. Holding his front paws, sometimes for several minutes, will do the trick and won’t be painful.

3. Use the leash. If guests are coming over, keep your dog on a leash. When he jumps on the visitors, pop the leash to engage his training collar, command, “Off!” and lead him to the other side of the room. Praise him after you lead him away.

Do you know why dog owners want to find the best dog beds for large dogs? It’s really a stupid question because the answer is so obvious – to get the lovable big beasts off of “their” beds! Right?

While it’s one thing to have a Yorkie sharing your bed space, it’s quite another to have a Mastiff hanging out in the middle of it. Even though your large dog may think he’s a lap dog, you may be tired of sleepless nights as you struggle to get a fair share of the bed.

So when you’ve had enough, you may want to consider luring Fido away from your bed with dog beds made especially for large dogs. Why, he’ll probably be quite flattered that you went to so much trouble to find the perfect bed just for him! And your days of waking up bleary eyed may at last be over. So let’s get down to the business of finding the perfect bed for your dog.

Dog Beds For Large Dogs – Buying Tips

Not all dogs are created equal and so it goes that not all dogs lay down to sleep in the same way. Is your dog a sprawler or a curler? Does your dog have a preferred spot in the house for snoozing? These factors will give you some guidance as to the shape and type of bed to look for as a starting point. Do you have an older dog or one with a health condition such as arthritis? If you do, there are beds made with hi-tech materials and special construction features to give your dog greater support and comfort. Heavy dogs, as well as those with joint problems will develop sore spots if the bedding material flattens out easily, so it’s really important to have a firm and resilient base to help prevent this.

In addition to the top priority of comfort, maybe you still would like a little style to go along with it? Sofa beds are one such option. They not only look stylish, but also provide some nice back support, or just a place your dog can hang his head while keeping an eye on you.

If your dog likes to sleep in various places around the house or wherever you happen to be most of the day, think about getting him a second bed – this will also help to keep him off of your couch.

Is your dog the type that often gets himself dirty, meaning that his bed needs frequent washing? If so, then it will make sense to get a bed with covers that can be zipped off and are machine washable.

Now that you have a few things to consider, come see what we think are some of the best large dog beds, as well as those for every other kind of dog.

Pomeranian adoption homes provide a safe, reliable place for owners to take their dogs to in order to find a home as well as provide medical care. They carefully screen the homes and select new families for the dogs to ensure they are being adopted into families that are willing and able to care for them properly. Pomeranian adoption homes give these little furry puppies a new lease on life as some dog owners are not very kind and leave these poor, helpless pups generally in a frightful state.

The Benefits of Pomeranian Adoption Homes

The abandoned or mistreated dogs are not the only lucky ones in the Pomeranian adoption homes however, as the owners are generally in for a nice surprise also because they are usually not puppies and are house trained as well as they are typically out of any bad puppy habits by the time they reach the Pomeranian adoption homes. The dogs that come in to these adoption homes also have their personality set and disposition so it’s a real treat in figuring out each one’s different personality.

Pomeranians are very intelligent breed of dogs and by the time they reach any Pomeranian adoption homes, they also are set in the way they look and the features that they carry. Due to the high intelligence and the maturity of these rescued animals, they are usually very excited to have someone care for them properly and lovingly and return the love and affection ten fold. The Pomeranian bonds with his or her new owner almost immediately and are a very loyal dog to have.

Reasons Why to Adopt From Pomeranian Adoption Homes

There are many just simple humane reasons for adopting a dog from Pomeranian adoption homes however, there are many very excellent reasons. For example, if you are the busy type and don’t have a lot of time to train and house break a puppy, the Pomeranian adoption homes are for you because the dogs are already housebroken in most cases. You might be thinking that they are sick or something is terribly wrong with them but that isn’t the case and if the dogs are ill, medical treatment is provided for them at the adoption home.

You can tell if a Pomeranian is sick because they are generally a hyper active dog and have a lot of energy. If the dog you are inquiring about seems lethargic and really lacking energy, best to talk to the home about it because it likely doesn’t know of the latest symptoms the dog might be displaying although it is extremely rare that this will happen at a rescue shelter for the Pomeranians.

Small dogs or lap dogs or comforters as they were once called have a very extensive history, encompassing several thousand years. Small breeds were often kept by nobility and given as presents to royal figures. It was also thought that small breeds were good for ones health. The Pekingees, pug and King Charles Cavalier Spaniel are three examples.

Many dog owners have a preference for small dogs over larger breeds, and for many different reasons. However, by virtue of their diminutive size, these dogs are much more affordable to keep, need less exercise in relation to larger breeds in general, and are simple to transport for example.

Many owners of larger dogs, and often those thinking of caring for a new dogs avoid smaller breeds, because of the perceived differences in their behaviour, in relation to larger dogs. It is thought, and wrongly of course, that smaller dogs are by nature, yappy, aggressive, possessive, over protective and demanding,, and so on.

If this assumption is not true, then why do so many small dog owners experience problems with their dogs behaving aggressively towards other dogs and humans and displaying possessive and demanding behaviours etc?

To get an understanding of the problem, we need to begin at the beginning. All puppies are cute and adorable, even the largest breed was small and cuddly at one time. However, the small breeds tend to retain their puppy looks and size, long after the cute Rottweiler puppy has grown and gained 50 Kg in weight, for instance

Researchers have found that humans have developed a biological response to ‘cute’ things, especially baby animals. It is thought the need to nurture and protect, perceived defenceless creatures is automatic.

This is where problems often begin; the owner over protects the dog, may carry him round, let him sleep on the bed or jump on the furniture when he chooses, and picks him up in the presence strange dogs, and gives in to his demands for attention. This is often done through the misguided notion that the dog needs protecting, by virtue of his size and ‘baby like’ qualities.

So how is this all worked out in the dogs mind? Although our domestic dogs are very different in many ways to his ancestor, the wolf, he has inherited much of his ancestors instinctual behaviours. A part of this instinctual blue print, comes the desire to be part of a group or pack. Although most dogs are more than happy to be the follower in their human pack, if their is no obvious leader, or the dog is getting signals from his owner that he is the leader of the pack, then the dog will have no option but to fill the role, as this is how life is played out in the dogs world.

Over time, the dog may show behaviours that to the experienced eye would be considered dominant, however, to the dogs owner these behaviours are seen as either breed specific, for example, ‘that’s how Chihuahuas’s are’, or part and parcel of the dogs personality, eg ‘he’s always been this way’. This kind of behaviour would be a cause for concern if seen in a larger dog, but somehow overlooked, or not considered serious in many smaller breeds.

There are a number of behaviours that are common to small dogs acting dominantly, so much so, that this type of behaviour observed in smaller breeds, has inherited the label ‘small dog syndrome’ or ‘little dog syndrome’. Some of the common behaviours that characterise ‘small dog syndrome’ are listed below.

Your dog has developed the habit of sitting on you, or jumping on you, or next to you, when he pleases.

Your dog does not allow you near him when he is eating or has a toy he is playing with

Your barks excessively to get your attention.

Your dog is over protective when other dogs or humans come near you.

Your dog growls when you attempt to move him from his favourite resting place.

Your dog is generally stubborn and refuses to follow commands given to him.

Your dog displays an exaggerated reaction to being left alone, characterised by constant barking, or destructive behaviour.

Much can be done to turn this problem around, however, owners must first consider the role they play in encouraging this type of behaviour in their dogs. Owners must come to realise that their small breed dogs are in fact animals and not little humans.

Secondly, owners must understand that it is natural for dogs to be a part of a ‘pack’ and more importantly, a pack in which they would much prefer to be a follower, than a leader. Understanding these two concepts alone, will help greatlyreduce the problem.

In terms of retraining, owners must communicate to their dogs that they are the leader, provider, and protector of the team. This can be done by controlling all of the dogs resources, for example, food, toys, treats, walks, and favourite places of rest, and allowing the dog access to them when the owner decides.

All demanding behaviour, for example barking for treats or to be picked up and so on, should be ignored, and all appropriate behaviour praised.

Aggressive and possessive behaviour towards other humans by the dog can be dealt with by having a place for the dog to go to when the owner is interacting with others. This may be to his crate, or a cushion in the corner of the room for example.

Owners should be aware that retraining takes time, especially in the case of dogs who have been allowed to display this kind of behaviour for a long time. With patience and repetition however, the dog will be content to become a follower, rather than the leader, of his human pack.

The bulldog is a very unique breed of dog that requires specific kinds of training, health care and exercise. Bulldog owners must therefore gain an understanding of this breed so that they can take good care of their pets. One of the most important forms of training that dog owners should give their dogs is toilet training. This is because dog owners do not want their dogs doing their business on their rugs and floors. The following section provides some guidelines on how you can train your bulldog to do his business in the proper way.

The Pen

One of the first things that you need to do is to provide your puppy with a pen that has two separate areas. It is a good idea to keep him in the pen as much as possible and to play with him while he is there so that he will understand that it is his pen. Then you should cover the whole floor area of the pen with newspaper. Half of the pen should serve as his “living quarters,” and this area should be covered with a blanket. The other half would serve as the “toilet” where he can do his business.

When he does his business on the “toilet” side, clear away the newspaper but leave some trace of the soiled newspaper because the bulldog will look for that same spot and do his business there again. Once he gets the idea, you can occasionally let him out of the pen but near the newspaper so that he can do his business there. In time, you can bring your bulldog on outside trips, and you can also apply the same principle if you wish for him to do his business in the garden or the yard.

Dogs are animals of habit, and bulldogs are no different. These simple steps can help you toilet train your bulldog and relieve you of the stress of finding little “packages” on your living room rug.

One of the first tasks most new dog owners focus on is dog toilet training. This process is not always easy and will usually result in a few accidents. With patience and knowledge, you can toilet train your dog quickly and easily with minimal setbacks. That does not mean the process is flawless. However, remember, your dog wants to please you and is doing his or her best to learn. In time, your canine companion will come to understand their new home and what is appropriate there.

Dog potty training problems can be difficult to handle in older dogs. Although it is not impossible to overcome, the ideal time to house train is when the dog is very young. This is when good habits can be formed. Older dog potty training may come with months or years of either no training or negative reinforcement. When working with an older canine, remember you will need even more patience and understanding to overcome the issue.

Dogs do not go in their beds or dens. It is a natural way of life for them. This instinct can be utilized when potty training a dog. Once you can establish your home as the dog’s “den,” house breaking will be a breeze. Prepare for accidents, but also be ready to praise success.

To start, find a place you want your dog to relieve itself. Most people pick a specific area in their yard. If you are using litter or paper training, then it may be a spot indoors. Take the dog to this area each time you suspect he or she has to go. Make a habit of going every so many minutes, even if the dog does not appear to need it. The younger the dog, the more frequent the visits should be.

Let your dog linger if needed. This can be especially important during less desirable weather, such as cold winter months. Some dogs will hurry back inside, anxious to get out of the cold. While you may agree, this can lead to an indoor accident if the dog comes back in too soon. This can be especially important when small dog potty training. A tiny dog has fewer defenses against cold. Consider purchasing a jacket or dog shoes for your small dog, if you deem such garments necessary. Most larger dogs have sufficient body fat and fur to stay warm for the few minutes they are outdoors during winter.

Just like children, dogs will figure out the house breaking process in their own time. Some pick it up very quickly while others have problems even after they seem to have grasped the concept. Remember a young dog will have a harder time waiting, with less bladder control than an older dog. Any dog under four months of age will need to be taken out during the night. Although it may be an inconvenience, make sure you get out of bed and allow your dog to do as he or she is supposed to. Successful potty training for dogs will require consistency, regardless of weather or time of day.

Be patient and accommodate your puppy as he or she grows, develops better muscle control and works through dog potty training. Do not scold your dog for waking you during the night to be taken out. Appreciate the fact that your pup understood and got your attention in order to avoid an accident. You and your dog can work together to keep your home clean and your dog relieved.

Training aggressive dog is a thorny issue and has gotten many dog owners vexed over it. Dog aggression can be a serious problem as there are laws and by-laws in different states that demand the punishment of dog owners in the form of court charges. At the same time, should your dog happen to attack and injure anyone, your poor dog would be put down. That said, with proper dog aggression training, the aggression in dogs can be curbed so that they do not turn on strangers and your closed ones. Are you ready to start learning some ‘training aggressive dog’ tips?

Such aggression normally finds its root in the lack of security and confidence. In such instances, simple dog obedience training would not curb aggressive dog behavior.

Training aggressive dog seriously and properly with special aggressive dog training will however solve the problem. Aggressive dog behavior includes barking and lunging at others also. Rather, send your dog to special dog obedience training school that knows exactly how to handle and train aggressive dogs. The local directory and yellow pages are great places to start looking.

One more thing you need to pay attention to is the training techniques and methodology they adopt in training aggressive dog. How they train aggressive dogs is important as some dog training schools are known to use obsolete methods which could be harmful to your dog. As time goes by, accumulated experience and knowledge sharing has taken the area of training aggressive dogs to a more advanced level. So it is worth the effort to be extra careful. After all, the truth is it is hard to train an aggressive dog but with the right techniques; it becomes less of a pain.

Every dog owner will definitely feel proud and happy if Fido go potty on command, does not jump on people neither chew the furniture and other household stuff. Surely, having a reliably trained jack russell terrier is one of the joys of having a canine companion… and this can be attributed to effective jack russell training.

Being fearless, intelligent and extremely energetic breed, a jack russell terrier may not only excel in obedience, agility or hunting. A jack russell may also excel in doing amusing dog tricks when training is provided. When training dog tricks, it is important that:

there must be a medium of communication between you and your dog. Since dogs cannot talk the way humans do, try to understand their signals and responses. Know that a dog that is confused, nervous, happy, distracted, stressed or ill will not learn efficiently so be wary of the signs your dog is trying to convey.

training must be done in a step by step process. Don’t expect that your dog will perfect the “play dead” trick without having to master the basic commands such as “come”, “down” or sit. Start from the basic and move your way up from there.

training sessions must be fun and interesting both for you and your dog. It is an advantage if they are mentally and physically challenged to prevent them from boredom. It is also recommended to keep training sessions short.

training sessions must end with rewards and praise to associate the training with something positive and good. Doing so will make him look forward to fun and interesting training sessions.

appropriate training methods are utilized. Positive reinforcements are widely used and recommended by many dog owners for it has been known to work on most dogs. Physical punishment is not an option for it will only cause aggression, dominance issues and other behavior related problems.

owners are aware that not all dogs are the same even if they are of the same breed. If your friend’s jack russell mastered the trick in two days, that does not necessarily mean that it will be the same for you and your dog. So don’t get frustrated if you have been teaching your jack russell to roll-over for three days.

Training a jack russell to do tricks is not impossible given this breed’s natural intelligence and oozing stamina. You just have to use the appropriate approach in order to become successful with your jack russell training.

Though small-bodied, jack russell terriers are sturdy and tough dogs developed to hunt and chase out foxes that has gone to the ground. In order to do tasks expected of them, it is important that this breed must be extremely intelligent, athletic, fearless and vocal. However, these characteristics may lead to destructive behavior if they are not properly stimulated and are not provided with appropriate jack russell training.

Jack russell training is more than just training a dog to excel in obedience or agility rings. It is even more than just training a dog to assist in hunting foxes, groundhog or badger. In jack russell training, you are also training your pet to behave in human-acceptable ways. A well-mannered dog sure brings pride and joy to his owner.

Training good manners can be a bit challenge especially when you look into those soulful eyes that seem to plead you to spoil them for the rest of their lives. Apparently, many dog owners like to spoil their pets – from countless toys to expensive and luxurious stuff such as bed, clothing and accessories – simple indications that the four-legged gets treatment fit for a king. A little spoiling won’t hurt but if it goes beyond normal, spoiling a pet like a jack russell terrier, will not just make you shed money on those expensive stuff but will also lead your pet to develop behavior problems such as dominance and aggression.

Setting limits can help you discipline your dog so as he will continue to grow the way you wants him to. Training Fido not to plead (and steal) human foods will not only save you from possible embarrassment when guests are in attendance but more importantly, will keep your pet safe from human foods that may pose danger to his health.

Teaching your dog commands like “stay”, “come”, “sit” and “down” has more benefits than it seems. You will be able to stop jumping, play biting, barking and other destructive behaviors such as chewing and digging. With a well-mannered dog, you will no longer have to worry of a possible disaster when a guest steps into your house.

It is also important that, you as the owner, assume the role as leader of the pack and must be made clear to the dog to prevent dominance issues and other related problem.

Apparently every dog owner wants a trained and intelligent dog that looks cute and adorable especially when performing a command. Though dogs are intelligent animals, they can not figure out basic obedience thus training them especially when they are still puppy is still needed.

There are lots of training areas as well as training methods that you can use to train your dog. Usually, basic command such as ‘sit’, ‘down’ and ‘stay’ are often taught first. These commands are not just mere tricks to show their talents but training them these commands will make them behave in a way that makes them nice to be around and keeps them safe and other people and pets as well.

Potty training should also be done at a young age. If your dog is potty trained, you can be sure that he will only use the bathroom only in the spot you have selected for him. You won’t have to spend time and effort cleaning the mess he created anywhere he wants.

Many methods and tools can help you in your dachshund training. Loving praise is one of the most simple and easy tool in training your dog. Praising them after he has done well will make him understand that you want him to continue what he is doing. Giving him rewards such as food treats and toys are also ideal training tools. Just make sure that the dog is not aware of the presence of the reward before giving commands so as not to bribe him to perform.

Most dog owners find leash and collars helpful in their dachshund training. There are several types of collars available in the market. Flat collars carry your dog’s name, license and rabies tags. Other types of collars are martingale collar, choke chain, halter or head collar, prong collar and electronic collars. However, some trainers suggest that using tools such as choke collars, prong collars and electronic collars can inflict pain to your pet. A choke collar, once misused, can cause permanent injury to your dog’s throat and the organs it contains. Prong collar, though might look like a medieval torture device is less likely to cause pain compared to choke collar. Electronic collar or shock collar is the less recommended tool for dog training use. It can cause more problems than you could imagine especially to aggressive dogs.

Whether doing the simple obedience training or training a dog to perform tricks, choosing the right method and training tools is one of the most important factors to consider. But always bear in mind not to inflict pain to your dog even if he has done something unacceptable. Cruelty will not give you a well behave dog. It will just cause physical and psychological problem that could make your dog suffer.
